Topics
I am particularly interested in machine-learning approaches to the following topics and questions:
Optimal experimental design: Which actions teach us the most about an unknown system?
Systems design under uncertainty: Which actions help us design a system that we only partially understand?
Simulation-based inference: How can we use a simulator to learn about the processes that generated the data?
Applications in engineering and the natural sciences: How can these methods speed up discovery and design in real scientific and engineering problems?
Your profile
Ideally, you have strong mathematical foundations, with training in statistics or machine learning, including reinforcement learning and optimisation, and are fluent in the Python or Julia scientific stack.
If interested
Please email me with:
a CV and transcripts
a short statement about what interests you most about my papers (2–3 paragraphs)
a short description of what you would like to do in my group (2–3 paragraphs)
your preferred start date
an indication of your funding situation
You do not need a fully worked-out proposal at this stage. The goal is to help me understand your interests and whether there might be a good match.
PhD funding
There are several routes to a funded PhD at Edinburgh; see here for an overview.
The School of Informatics and the University offer competitive PhD scholarships. See here and here.
The School of Informatics has fully funded Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs). I am a member of the supervisor pool for the CDTs in Biomedical Innovation, Machine Learning Systems, and Designing Responsible NLP.
Application deadlines are typically between November and January; please check the sites above for exact dates.
Postdocs
I currently do not have funding for a postdoc. If you have your own funding or are applying for a fellowship and would like to work with my group, please get in touch.
